Chrysler Electronic Throttle Control (ETC) Learn Procedure

Certain Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Ram vehicles equipped with Electronic Throttle Control (ETC) may require an ETC Learn procedure after replacing the Engine Control Module (ECM) or Powertrain Control Module (PCM).

At ARES Technologies, we provide pre-programmed replacement ECMs and PCMs configured for specific vehicle applications. Although our modules are programmed with the appropriate VIN and factory calibration before shipment, certain vehicle-specific learn procedures may still be necessary after installation.

After PCM replacement, vehicles equipped with ETC may experience reduced or limited acceleration, illumination of the Check Engine Light or red lightning bolt warning indicator, or Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) P2122 and P2127.

These codes generally indicate low-voltage conditions in the accelerator pedal position sensor circuits. Although they can be associated with other ETC system faults, if these symptoms or codes appear after PCM replacement, an ETC Learn procedure must be performed before proceeding with further diagnostics or troubleshooting.

What Is an ETC Learn Procedure?

The Electronic Throttle Control system manages engine throttle operation electronically using signals from the accelerator pedal position sensors and throttle position sensors.

An ETC Learn procedure allows the vehicle's control system to perform the necessary throttle-related initialization or adaptation after PCM replacement.

On many Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Ram vehicles, the red lightning bolt warning indicator is associated with the ETC system. If this indicator appears along with reduced acceleration or related DTCs after installing a replacement PCM, the ETC Learn procedure should be completed before investigating other potential causes.

What You Need

  • A compatible bi-directional OBD-II scan tool that supports Chrysler ETC Learn functions.
  • Access to the vehicle's OBD-II diagnostic port.

A basic OBD-II code reader generally cannot perform this procedure. The scan tool must support the appropriate manufacturer-specific ETC Learn function.

Chrysler ETC Learn Instructions

  1. Connect the scan tool. Connect a compatible bi-directional OBD-II scan tool to the vehicle's diagnostic port.
  2. Turn the ignition ON. Turn the ignition to the ON/RUN position without starting the engine.
  3. Access PCM/ECM functions. Using the scan tool, select the appropriate vehicle and enter the PCM/ECM diagnostic functions.
  4. Locate the relearn menu. Navigate to Miscellaneous Functions, Special Functions, or Relearn Procedures, depending on the scan tool.
  5. Select ETC Learn. Choose ETC Learn, Electronic Throttle Control Relearn, or the equivalent available function.
  6. Complete the procedure. Follow the scan tool's on-screen instructions. Do not press the accelerator pedal unless instructed by the scan tool.
  7. Restart the vehicle. Once the procedure is completed, turn the ignition OFF, then restart the engine.
  8. Verify operation. Check throttle response and verify whether the ETC warning indicator and related DTCs have cleared. If necessary, clear stored DTCs and recheck.

Important Notes

  • The ETC Learn procedure is not required after every PCM replacement. It may be necessary when the vehicle is equipped with Electronic Throttle Control and exhibits the symptoms or DTCs described above.
  • Menu names and on-screen instructions may vary depending on the scan tool and vehicle application.
  • An ETC Learn procedure does not necessarily resolve every throttle-related fault. If symptoms or DTCs remain after successfully completing the procedure, further diagnosis of the ETC system, including its sensors, wiring, and related components, may be necessary.

Pre-Programmed Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Ram Replacement PCMs

ARES Technologies specializes in replacement Engine Control Modules (ECMs) and Powertrain Control Modules (PCMs) for Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Ram vehicles.

Our replacement modules are prepared for the specific vehicle application using OEM-matched hardware, VIN programming, and the appropriate factory calibration. Each module is bench-tested before shipment to help verify proper operation.

Depending on the vehicle application, our replacement PCMs may be ready to install and start without additional programming, while others may require a key/immobilizer learn or additional setup procedures such as the ETC Learn described above.

Whether you're an automotive repair shop, professional technician, or vehicle owner replacing a defective PCM, ARES Technologies offers pre-programmed replacement modules configured for your vehicle application.
