GM Clutch Pedal Position Learn After PCM Replacement – Manual Transmission

GM Clutch Pedal Position Learn After PCM Replacement – Manual Transmission

Certain General Motors (GM) vehicles equipped with manual transmissions require a Clutch Pedal Position (CPP) Learn procedure after replacing the Engine Control Module (ECM) or Powertrain Control Module (PCM).

At ARES Technologies, we provide pre-programmed replacement ECMs and PCMs configured for specific GM vehicle applications. Although our modules are programmed with the appropriate VIN and factory calibration before shipment, certain vehicles require additional learn procedures after installation.

One of these procedures is the Clutch Pedal Position Learn, which is particularly important when a vehicle experiences a no-start condition after PCM replacement.

What Is a Clutch Pedal Position Learn Procedure?

The Clutch Pedal Position sensor monitors the position of the clutch pedal and provides information to the ECM or PCM.

On certain GM vehicles equipped with manual transmissions, this information is used to determine whether the clutch pedal is properly depressed before allowing the engine to start.

The Clutch Pedal Position Learn procedure allows the replacement ECM or PCM to recognize and store the clutch pedal sensor's operating position.

Without successfully completing this procedure, the vehicle may not start even when the replacement PCM has been correctly programmed.

When Is the Clutch Pedal Position Learn Required?

On applicable GM vehicles, the procedure may be necessary under the following conditions:

  • After ECM or PCM replacement.
  • When Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P080A is present.
  • When the vehicle experiences a no-start condition after PCM replacement.

The procedure may also be required after replacing the Clutch Pedal Position sensor or performing repairs that affect its operation.

An important consideration is that DTC P080A and an illuminated Check Engine Light are not always present. Therefore, the absence of a trouble code does not eliminate the possibility that a Clutch Pedal Position Learn is necessary.

If an applicable GM vehicle with a manual transmission does not start after PCM replacement, the Clutch Pedal Position Learn procedure should be performed before proceeding with further diagnostics or troubleshooting.

What You Need

  • A compatible bi-directional OBD-II scan tool that supports GM Clutch Pedal Position Learn functions.
  • Access to the vehicle's OBD-II diagnostic port.

A basic OBD-II code reader cannot perform this procedure. The scan tool must support the appropriate GM manufacturer-specific learn function.

GM Clutch Pedal Position Learn Instructions

  1. Connect the scan tool. Connect a compatible bi-directional OBD-II scan tool to the vehicle's diagnostic port.
  2. Turn the ignition ON. Turn the ignition to the ON/RUN position without starting the engine. Ensure the vehicle is secured with the parking brake applied.
  3. Check for diagnostic trouble codes. Access the ECM or PCM and check for stored DTCs. Address other relevant faults that may interfere with the procedure.
  4. Locate the learn function. Navigate to Module Setup, Manual Transmission, or the equivalent menu, depending on the scan tool and vehicle application.
  5. Select Clutch Pedal Position Learn. Choose Clutch Pedal Position Learn, CPP Sensor Learn, or the equivalent available function.
  6. Depress the clutch pedal. Fully depress and hold the clutch pedal steady while following the scan tool's on-screen instructions. Do not release or move the pedal unless instructed.
  7. Verify successful completion. Confirm that the scan tool displays Complete, Performed Successfully, or an equivalent confirmation.
  8. Turn the ignition OFF. After successfully completing the learn procedure, turn the ignition OFF for at least 30 seconds to allow the ECM or PCM to store the learned values.
  9. Start the vehicle. Attempt to start the engine and verify proper operation. If DTC P080A was present, confirm that it has cleared or is no longer active.

Important Notes

  • This procedure applies to certain GM vehicles equipped with manual transmissions and is not required for automatic-transmission applications.
  • The Clutch Pedal Position Learn may be required after PCM replacement regardless of whether DTC P080A is present.
  • The clutch pedal must remain fully depressed and steady during the learn procedure. Movement may cause the procedure to fail.
  • On certain GM applications, the learn can only be performed once per ignition cycle.
  • Scan tool menu names and instructions may vary depending on the vehicle and diagnostic equipment.
  • If the learn procedure fails or the vehicle still does not start after successful completion, further diagnosis of the clutch pedal position sensor, associated wiring, starting system, or other related components may be necessary.

Pre-Programmed GM Replacement ECMs and PCMs

ARES Technologies specializes in replacement Engine Control Modules (ECMs) and Powertrain Control Modules (PCMs) for Chevrolet, GMC, Cadillac, Buick, and other General Motors vehicles.

Our replacement modules are prepared for specific vehicle applications using OEM-matched hardware, VIN programming, and the appropriate factory calibration. Each module is bench-tested before shipment to help verify proper operation.

Depending on the vehicle application, our replacement ECMs and PCMs may be ready to install and start without additional programming, while others may require key/immobilizer programming or additional procedures such as the Clutch Pedal Position Learn described above.

Whether you're an automotive repair shop, professional technician, or vehicle owner replacing a defective PCM, ARES Technologies offers pre-programmed replacement modules configured for your vehicle application.
